Toyota Gazoo Racing Eyes Fifth Consecutive Win at Safari Rally Kenya in Landmark 100th WRC Event

There's a buzz in the air as Toyota Gazoo Racing gears up to defend its unbeaten streak at the Safari Rally Kenya. This year is extra special since it marks the team's 100th event in the FIA World Rally Championship since they first hit the scene in 2017. Expectations are high as they have kicked off the 2025 season on a perfect note, boasting back-to-back one-two finishes at the Monte Carlo and Sweden rallies, which is considered the best start by a manufacturer in this era of WRC.

Heading the driver lineup is Elfyn Evans, who currently leads the drivers' standings following a stellar performance in Sweden. His podium finish there was a huge confidence boost. Then there’s Takamoto Katsuta, who seems to have a special knack for the Kenyan terrain, with three podium finishes already under his belt. Kalle Rovanperä, who clinched victories in Kenya in 2022 and 2024, is eager to climb the ranks after a rough start to the season. Meanwhile, Sami Pajari enters new territory, tackling the Kenyan rally for the first time through his TGR-WRT2 entry.

The Safari Rally has become somewhat of a stomping ground for Toyota since its reintroduction in 2021, with the team winning every edition since then. Adding a layer of nostalgia to this year’s rally is the participation of Juha Kankkunen. The four-time champion, who snagged his first WRC victory in Kenya 40 years ago, is lending his expertise as the team’s Deputy Principal.

This rally is no walk in the park. Drivers are up against unpredictable weather conditions, rough and rugged terrain, along with newly extended stage distances this time. Every pacenote and car setup needs to be precisely prepared to tackle these challenges. Toyota, known for their reliability in Kenya, is all set but drivers have to adjust to this year's new car specifications and gravel tire setups.

Katsuta stressed the importance of keeping an eye on the inherent risks involved in the rally. It's not just about speed but about strategy and control. Rovanperä, reflecting on his somewhat rocky start to the season, emphasized the need to bounce back and regain form. For newbie Pajari, it's about tapping into the wealth of experience surrounding him while keeping a sharp focus on personal performance amid the tricky Kenyan conditions.
